Windows XP reached the end of Microsoft's support on April 8, 2014, and Microsoft no longer distributes it. Follow these steps to install Windows XP ISO offline on your PC:

Windows XP ISOs are no longer publicly distributed by Microsoft. Sources: original Windows XP install CD, Volume Licensing Service Center (organizations only), or software preservation archives.

For modern PCs, you almost certainly want to install Windows XP into a virtual machine using VirtualBox, VMware, or Hyper-V — bare-metal XP installs on post-2010 hardware are extremely difficult due to driver and chipset compatibility.

If installing to bare metal: use Rufus to create a bootable USB. Select MBR partition scheme and BIOS/Legacy boot mode — XP has no UEFI support whatsoever.

Disable Secure Boot, AHCI mode (use IDE/Compatibility), and Fast Boot in BIOS/UEFI before booting the XP installer.

Enter your Windows XP product key during setup. Microsoft's XP activation servers were retired around 2020 — phone activation is no longer available either.

After install, integrate Service Pack 3 if not already in your ISO. Most XP SP3 installs cannot pull Windows Update — install hotfixes manually from offline catalogs.

Cannot activate Windows XP — no response from Microsoft servers

Microsoft retired the XP activation infrastructure circa 2020. XP installs that have not been activated previously will run in an unactivated state — fully functional but with periodic notifications. There is no longer a legal way to activate a fresh XP install. For permanent use, run XP inside a VM where activation timing is less of an issue.

Modern SATA controllers default to AHCI mode; XP only supports IDE/Compatibility. Switch your SATA mode to IDE/Legacy in BIOS before installing. Modern NVMe drives are not supported by XP at all — install XP only to a SATA SSD or HDD.
