What Apache OpenOffice does

Apache OpenOffice is a free, open-source office suite maintained by the Apache Software Foundation. It evolved from the original OpenOffice.org project and offers a complete set of desktop productivity applications available on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The suite includes six components. Writer handles word processing with support for styles, tables, mail merge, and document formatting. Calc provides spreadsheet functionality including formulas, charts, and data analysis tools. Impress covers presentation creation with slide layouts, transitions, and drawing tools. Draw is a vector graphics editor suitable for diagrams and illustrations. Base is a database front-end that can connect to external database engines such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, and HSQLDB, and also includes a built-in database for standalone use. Math is a formula editor for inserting equations into any of the other components. Apache OpenOffice uses the OpenDocument Format (ODF) as its native file format, an open ISO-standardized format for office documents. It can open and save documents in common Microsoft Office formats, including.doc,.xls, and.ppt, making it compatible with files shared from Microsoft Office environments. Documents can also be exported to PDF directly from any application component. The suite supports a macro system for task automation and can be extended through a community-maintained extension library. Its interface will feel familiar to users who have worked with desktop office suites from earlier generations. Apache OpenOffice is suitable for individuals, students, small businesses, and organizations looking for a no-cost, open-source office suite for everyday document tasks. Users comparing free office suites should also consider LibreOffice, which is a fork of the same codebase and currently sees more active development. The installer available through this page is the full offline standalone installer from the official source. No internet connection is required during installation. Always download Apache OpenOffice only from its official publisher or the domain shown on this page to ensure you receive an unmodified build.
