What Everything Search does
Everything is a file-search utility for Windows developed by voidtools and distributed free of charge. Rather than crawling the file system folder by folder as Windows built-in search does, Everything reads the NTFS Master File Table directly. This approach allows it to build an initial index of every file and folder on an NTFS-formatted drive in a short time and keep that index current in real time as files are created, renamed, moved, or deleted. Searches are evaluated as you type, and results update with each keystroke. On a machine with a large number of files spread across multiple drives, the difference compared to Windows Search is immediately noticeable. The results list shows file name, path, size, and date attributes, and can be sorted by any of those columns. Search syntax supports wildcards, Boolean operators, and full regular expressions for users who need precise or complex queries. Filters let you narrow results by file type, parent folder, date modified, or other attributes. Bookmarks allow frequently used searches to be saved and recalled quickly. Everything can run as a standard application, as a background service that starts with Windows, or in a portable configuration that requires no installation. An optional HTTP server mode makes the local index queryable from a web browser on the same network, and an ETP server mode allows other Everything instances on the network to search the index remotely.
